Advancement Project and Gay Straight Alliance Network Release
Innovative Tool to Facilitate Discussion Around School-to-Prison Pipeline
“Game of K-12 Life” is an Interactive Resource to Engage Communities in School Discipline Dialogue, Now Available for Download and Public Use
WASHINGTON - Today, Advancement Project and the Gay Straight Alliance Network released an updated version of “The Game of K-12 Life,” a workshop resource designed to facilitate discussion around the school-to-prison pipeline. The game, which both organizations use frequently in trainings and discussions, is available for public use at no cost.
Originally released in 2013, the current iteration of “The Game of K-12 Life” also includes a free explanation pack for facilitators to design their own student identities and outcomes to make them fit with their unique local situations. The release is accompanied by a video, created by Advancement Project, allowing viewers to see the game being played.
In the game, players assume the role of a student with a unique identity and background, which may be a white student, a black student, a queer student, an undocumented student, or a student with a learning disability. Participants follow what happens to these individual students when they encounter challenges and zero-tolerance throughout their school career. Discussion questions and “Reality Checks” throughout the game encourages players to reflect on their own experiences and provide facts and statistics about the school-to-prison pipeline.
“Not only is the game an interactive way to discuss a serious topic like the school-to-prison pipeline, but allows participants to discuss both causes and solutions,” said Advancement Project’s Schoolhouse to Jailhouse Track Program Director, Thena Robinson-Mock.
“Advancement Project has been using this resource for years, and we are excited to be able to share it with others.”
ADVANCEMENT PROJECT is a national, next-generation, multiracial civil rights organization that supports grassroots movements that aim to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline.
