Our partners in Buffalo Citizen Action New York recently held their annual gala where they celebrated milestones over the last year, including their Code of Conduct victory, success around equitable school funding, public funding of elections, and Obamacare work.
Advancement Project was awarded this year's Organizational Support Award for our work with them on passing, implementing, and disseminating their Code of Conduct. Kaitlin and I had the honor of receiving the award on behalf of the organization. They thanked us for our "continuous advocacy" and for "making them look good."
While the year has not yet ended, we have already seen the fruits of our labor - suspensions are down almost 2,500 compared to the same time period last year, a reduction of almost 32%! Additionally, the district is piloting two whole school restorative justice programs next year, and has been great at holding monthly meetings with our partners, where we talk about data, gaps in the Code's implementation, and next steps. This is what democracy looks like!
